‘Student of the Game’: Pitching Ace Paige McAllister the Heartbeat of Tremont Softball

June 8, 2021 by Tara S

Adam Duvall | Peoria Journal Star

TREMONT — Here’s the situation: Tremont leads Illinois Valley Central by a run in the final inning of a Class 2A regional championship softball game. IVC has runners on second and third with no outs. The current batter has a 3-0 count.

Not an ideal scenario with the season on the line.

But not everyone has Paige McAllister in the circle.

All the scores:2021 IHSA softball state tournament schedule, scores, pairings for the Peoria area

The Tremont senior battled back to get a strikeout for the first out, then fell behind 3-1 before sitting down the next batter. She then worked the count full before getting a swinging strike to end the game.

“It’s definitely rattling for a pitcher,” McAllister said of the near disaster, “but I mean, I have confidence in my defense. I know, in the end, I just got to trust my stuff and trust my catcher to catch it. I know my abilities. I just got to stick to that. Be confident.

NATIONAL GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL RANKINGS RELEASED FOR APRIL, AS SPRING SEASON BEGINS WITH MAJOR NATIONAL EVENTS

April 22, 2021 by Tara S

By USA Wrestling, National Wrestling Hall of Fame, FloWrestling

USA Wrestling, FloWrestling and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum has published its sixth national rankings for high school girls wrestlers for the 2020-21 season.

This ranking evaluates all girls enrolled in grades 8-12, and athletes from all 50 states are eligible for selection.

It has been a busy time for girls high school wrestlers. Since the last ranking in March, numerous states have completed their official or unofficial girls state championships. These state tournaments play an important role in setting the rankings during this time of the year.

In addition, the major spring and summer national championships have already begun. The two events that had a tremendous impact on the April rankings were USA Wrestling’s High School National Recruiting Showcase and the Girls Folkstyle Nationals, both held in Coralville, Iowa.

Iowa high school wrestling: Meet the 2021 All-Iowa Girls’ Wrestling Team

March 30, 2021 by Tara S

Cody GoodwinDes Moines Register

The continued growth of girls’ wrestling in Iowa reached new heights this season.

There were 683 girls that wrestled across the state, according to Trackwrestling. At the girls’ state tournament in January, sponsored for the third year by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association, 457 girls from more than 100 schools competed.

The numbers are continuing to pop and the overall talent level is rising, too, and both of those facts are represented here, in our 2021 All-Iowa Girls’ Wrestling Team.

In this, we selected Elite members for our girls’ wrestling team, the wrestlers we consider to be the best of the best at the 12 weights contested at the IWCOA girls’ state tournament. We also included 12 additional honorable mention picks.

This year’s Elite Team selections represent nine different schools. There are five seniors, three juniors, three sophomores, and one freshmen. The honorable mention picks include three seniors, two juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen.

As the sport continues to grow and evolve here in Iowa, we feel it is our obligation to grow and evolve with it. Elite team members will be invited to the virtual Des Moines Register’s All-Iowa Sports Awards in Des Moines this June.

The selections were made based on in-season results, Register staff observations, and consultations with high school, college and recruiting contacts. Records listed are from Trackwrestling.
