For Wrestling Icon Dan Gable, Presidential Medal of Freedom is an Achievement of a Lifetime

December 7, 2020 by Tara S

Dan Gable and President Donald Trump

By: Cody GoodwinDes Moines Register

Dan Gable, wrestling legend, awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom USA Today

Dan Gable stood inside the Oval Office on Monday afternoon. To his left, President Donald J. Trump rattled off Gable’s many wrestling accomplishments: state champ, national champ, Olympic champ, successful coach, relentless ambassador, on and on.

Trump then turned to Gable with a wry smile.

“Now, I’m larger than you, a little bit,” Trump said. “Do you think I could take you in wrestling?”

Gable didn’t even smile at the idea.

“You would have no chance,” he responded, sparking laughter.

President Trump awarded Gable the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Monday, the nation’s highest civilian honor. The modern iteration of the distinction was established by President John F. Kennedy in 1963 to recognize extraordinary individuals who have made exceptional contributions to America’s national interests, society and culture.

“I wouldn’t be here if I had just won an Olympic gold medal,” Gable said. “It has been a lifetime of work, learning from others, then taking that knowledge and applying it to others in many ways so that they can perform at their highest and be successful.”

Gable is the first wrestler — athlete or coach — to receive this honor. It is meant as an individual award, but for the 72-year-old, it represents so much more.

Gable’s whole family made the trip on Monday. His wife, Kathy, stood beside him, beaming. His four daughters, Molly, Jenni, Annie and Mackie, plus their husbands and his 13 grandchildren, filed in behind. He could not have pictured this day without them.

CORVALLIS, Oregon – Oregon State head coach and Beaver Dam RTC president Chris Pendleton announced on Thursday the addition of two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe to its athlete roster.

“The Pacific Northwest has produced some of the true pioneers for women’s wrestling, and with that said we are proud to announce the addition of two-time World bronze medalist Alyssa Lampe to our RTC,” Pendleton said. “When we had the idea of starting the Beaver Dam Regional Training Center, we had a vision of creating a RTC that’s was one of the most Inclusive in the world. USA Wrestling, FloWrestling and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum has published its third national rankings for high school girls wrestlers for the 2020-21 season.

This ranking evaluates all girls enrolled in grades 8-12, and athletes from all 50 states are eligible for selection.

With the high school season being held at non-traditional times this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the committee will publish monthly updates to these rankings. Please expect that there could be many changes, based upon athletes establishing new weight classes, as well as additional athletes that are able to compete as wrestling becomes more available in their state and region.

Since the November ranking, big events have included the USA Wrestling UWW Junior Nationals, two USA Wrestling Folkstyle Tour of America events, and a variety of large tournaments and dual meet competitions held in many locations across the nation.

Five Things to Know About Olympic Wrestling Champion Jordan Burroughs

December 1, 2020 by Tara S

Jordan Burroughs

By Andrew Binner | Olympic Channel

Jordan Burroughs is the golden boy of freestyle wrestling, in every sense of the word.

The New Jersey-born grappler first gained notoriety at college as a two-time NCAA champion, before securing a US record 69-consecutive matches to start his Senior career.

That streak included 74kg Olympic gold for Team USA at London 2012, while he also won four-consecutive world championships titles from 2011-2017.

Burroughs’ social media profiles can all be found under the handle @alliseeisgold, a statement which has often become a manifestation.

However, a rare road bump at the Rio 2016 Olympics saw him finish outside of the medals. Despite having already won everything the sport has to offer, he returned to the mat hungrier than ever for success, which speaks volumes of his inner drive.

Now 32-years-old, his only goal is to win gold again at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

But how well do you know the American wrestler?
