Financial Commitment Increases from $150,000 to $300,000 per Team in 2021-22

April 28, 2021 (Brooklyn, N.Y.) – The National Women’s Hockey League today announced a substantial salary cap increase for its seventh season in 2021-22, doubling it from $150,000 to $300,000 per team. The breakthrough terms were announced by Commissioner Tyler Tumminia.

“The NWHL is committed to its vision of providing opportunities for elite women’s hockey players to earn a living playing the game they love,” said Tumminia. “This increased investment by ownership, especially following a challenging and shortened season, is a significant step forward and exemplifies the strength of our league and our developing business model as we continue to advance professional women’s hockey and inspire the next generation of female athletes.”

By: USA Hockey

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior goaltender Aerin Frankel (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) from Northeastern University was named the 24th recipient of the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award today as the top player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey.

“Aerin has been the backbone of our team the past four seasons and this year has been her best,” said Dave Flint, head women’s ice hockey coach at Northeastern. “She is one of, if not the, most competitive goalies I have coached which I feel is the most important quality in a goaltender. The confidence the team has in her allows us to play the way we want to. Her numbers are off the charts and this year she has been rewriting the record books.”

AERIN FRANKEL APRIL 2021 ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

By: Ian Thomsen

Northeastern senior goaltender Aerin Frankel was honored Saturday with the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award as the top player in NCAA Division 1 women’s ice hockey.

Frankel joins Kendall Coyne-Schofield, the 2016 winner, and Brooke Whitney, who won in 2002, as Northeastern’s recipients of the highest individual honor in the sport. Frankel became the fourth goaltender to win the award.

“There have been so many amazing players that have come before me, and to have my name on a list alongside them is very humbling and makes me very proud,” said Frankel. “To represent our university and to get another goalie’s name on that list is pretty cool, too. All the recipients of this award are part of a very special group, and I’m really excited to join them.”

Goalie Charlotte Cagigos Skates a Rare Path in Men’s Pro Hockey in France

March 16, 2021 by Tara S

Charlotte Cagigos is the backup goaltender for the Drakkars of Caen, an otherwise all-male team in France’s Division 1 ice hockey league. Her story is exceptional in French professional sport.

A woman plying her craft surrounded by male colleagues is rare in French sport, but that is what every day on the job looks like for Charlotte Cagigos.

“When I arrived in Caen, I never thought I’d make the pro team someday. And then, I never thought I’d play a game with them,” the 20-year-old goalie tells FRANCE 24. “I don’t want to set limits for myself.”

FROM UNDERDOG GOALTENDER TO POSSIBLE NCAA CHAMPION: HOW AERIN FRANKEL EMERGED

March 12, 2021 by Tara S

By: Ian Thomsen

So much depends on the goaltender, especially in big ice hockey tournaments. On Monday, Northeastern senior Aerin Frankel—an undersized underdog for much of her career—will be facing the biggest challenge of her career.

Her No. 1 Huskies (20-1-1) will open the eight-team NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Championship as favorites to win the national title in Erie, Pa.

Frankel will be smiling.

“I’m excited, but I also feel calm and prepared,” Frankel says as she looks ahead to the NCAA quarterfinal Monday at 2 p.m. against No. 8 Robert Morris (16-7-1). “You can stress yourself out in the moments leading up to the game, but at the end of the day you just need to remember all the work that you’ve put in, and that’s why you are in that place. I just think that it’s not really worth stressing.”

TIRED OF WAITING FOR SPORTS EQUALITY, THESE 4 WOMEN STARS CREATED TOGETHXR

March 11, 2021 by Tara S

By: Ian Thomsen

The four athletes weren’t going to wait any longer to be granted equality. They decided to seize it.

Alex Morgan (soccer), Sue Bird (basketball), Simone Manuel (swimming), and Chloe Kim (snowboarding)—each an international star in her sport—announced last week that they have created TOGETHXR, a media and commerce company built to promote women in sports and the media.

The idea is long overdue, says Lisa Markland, a former track-and-field star at Northeastern who has assisted the Center for the Study of Sport in Society for more than 15 years as a social justice facilitator.
