Louisville, Ky. – Maryville University graduate student pitcher Alyssa Callans was named the Wilson/National Fastpitch Coaches Association National Division II Pitcher of the Week for the period ending March 7, 2021. She becomes the first player in program history to earn the national weekly award from the coaching group.
The graduate student from Joilet, Ill., and the Saints took two of three games this past weekend over Parkside to improve its record to 2-3 on the young season. Maryville split a doubleheader on Saturday by winning the first game 2-0 and then dropped the nightcap 4-1. The Saints won the rubber match of the series Sunday afternoon by a score of 5-0.
Callans threw the program’s first no-hitter since Wendy Macias held Rockhurst hitless March 25, 2016. Callans struck out 10 Rangers in facing only three batters over the minimum to earn her first win of the season. She backed up the no-no on Sunday with a perfect game. Callans fanned 14 batters in the Saints victory. She becomes the first Saint in program history to throw two no-hitters in a career and is the career leader in strikeouts for the Saints with 413.
Callans also earned her second Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week honor this past Monday for her outstanding performance in the circle.
