The Maryville University softball team picked up three selections to the 2021 All-Great Lakes Valley Conference team as announced Wednesday by the league office. Taylor Shingler was a first-team selection, and Alyssa Callans and Hannah Tolley both earned second team honors. Tolley was also Maryville’s nominee for the GLVC’s James R. Spalding Sportsmanship award.
A junior outfielder, Shingler torched the ball with a .422 batting average, which is fourth in the league for players who have played at least 20 games. She leads the Saints with 35 hits and is second with 14 RBIs. Shingler has drawn a team-best 16 walks and paces Maryville with a .520 on-base percentage. In addition, she has stolen 20 bases on 22 attempts.
Callans, a graduate student, earned her honor as at utility/pitcher. She is hitting .315 with a team-high 27 RBI with 51 total bases. Callans has cranked out five home runs, four doubles and two triples. She has a team-best .573 slugging percentage. In the circle, Callans has compiled a 14-5 record with a 1.30 ERA. In 124-1/3 innings pitches, she has 147 strikeouts and is holding opponents to just a .180 batting average. Earlier this year, Callans was the NFCA Division II Pitcher of the Year after throwing a no-hitter and following up in her next outing with a perfect game.
Tolley, a senior outfielder, hit .365 with 12 runs scored, six RBI and a .431 on-base percentage. In just 17 games, she was successful on all 11 of her stolen base attempts. Tolley had started 65 straight games in the outfield before her season was cut short in mid-April.
The Saints (18-13) are next in action at the 2021 GLVC Softball Tournament. Maryville earned the No. 4 seed and takes on No. 5 seed Rockhurst Thursday, May 6, at 10 a.m. in East Peoria, Ill.
