Be a Blessing: World Games Community Outreach Organizer Turning Tragedy into Chance to Help Others

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – On a sunny afternoon two days before Thanksgiving, a truck full of all the holiday trimmings, with the World Games 2022 logo emblazoned on the side pulls up in front of Mrs. Dianne Hasberry’s home.

“Oh this is a Blessing. God is really good to us!” she exclaims.

She and her son Reginald and family will have a feast this year, with ham, turkey, stuffing, Hawaiian rolls and more, thanks to the Birmingham Organizing Committee of the World Games.

“When you think about how blessed we are as an organization you have to realize that as blessed as you are, you have to be a blessing,” says Kathy Boswell. She’s the Vice President of Community Engagement for the World Games 2022. “We have been blessed to have people believe in the games and so we are reflecting together with so many other companies to take a moment to be a blessing to others in this city so that’s really how it’s come about.”

That’s something that the Hasberry family believes in too.

“As long as you walk right and talk right and don’t just think about yourself if you get a blessing to bless somebody else,” says Dianne Hasberry, “You live right, you get a blessing you pass it on to somebody else.”

Teaching Gratitude Without Comparison

Gratitude, or the simple practice of noticing and appreciating the good things around us, is something that’s often at the forefront of parents’ and caregivers’ minds this time of year. Most adults want to help their girl develop a solid sense of gratitude because they know how beneficial noticing and appreciating the things in our lives can be. According to Harvard Health, those who practice gratitude tend to have lower levels of stress, report higher levels of life satisfaction, and enjoy better relationships with their family and friends.

While the evidence is clear that practicing gratitude can be beneficial, the way that many well-meaning parents aim to teach their girls gratitude can be problematic. When parents and caregivers begin talking to their girl about gratitude, many start by comparing her life to someone else’s in order to point out exactly what she should be grateful for. For example, being grateful for physical health because others are sick, being grateful for a supportive person in their life because not everyone has one, being grateful for food or material things because others don’t have what you have. Comparison-based gratitude may seem like an easy way to help a girl become mindful of the good in her life, but, in practice, it often serves only to reinforce the idea that she should be comparing herself and her life to others.

The World Games 2022 Announces Disability Inclusion Partnership with Lakeshore Foundation

Birmingham organizations to develop initiative to promote accessibility at international event.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Oct. 30, 2020) – When The World Games commences in Birmingham, Alabama in July of 2022, it will be the most accessible edition in the event’s 40-year history. Officials from the Birmingham Organizing Committee and Lakeshore Foundation today announced a new partnership that will focus on making The Games more inclusive of adapted sports, athletes, fans and experiences for people with a disability.

Together, the organizations will develop and implement A Journey to One World, One Games, an initiative for disability inclusion and access. The initiative will focus on four primary strategic priorities – establishing a diverse and  representative steering committee; creating an inclusive and accessible athlete experience; enhancing accessibility and inclusion for fans; and, developing a training and education program for staff, volunteers and partners.

“Our goal for this program is to make The World Games 2022 a welcoming, accessible and inclusive event for all,” said Nick Sellers, CEO of The World Games 2022. “But beyond that, we also want to create a legacy for accessibility and disability inclusivity for Birmingham and future editions of The World Games – one that will last far beyond 2022.”
