AGSA RADIOSPORT

American Gold Sports Alliance (AGSA) is excited to announce the launch of its Radiosport Division. The American Gold Sports Alliance (AGSA) Radiosport Division is set to make a real impact by increasing opportunities for girls and women in radio-related competitions and activities. AGSA seeks to improve and expand the opportunities for girls and women, providing avenues for self-improvement, confidence building, and promotion of an underserved and underrepresented group of current or future radio enthusiasts.

What Is Radiosport?

Radiosport (or radio sport) is formal competition among amateur radio operators in any of three amateur radio activities: ARDFDXing, and contesting. The Friendship Radiosport Games is an international multi-sport event that includes all three types of radiosport. Since 1977, the International Amateur Radio Union has sponsored the IARU HF World Championship (originally named the IARU Radiosport Championship). The World Radiosport Team Championship is another international competition.

The most common use of the term radiosport is as a synonym for amateur radio contesting (ham radio contesting). Contesting is an activity where amateur radio stations attempt to make as many two-way contacts with other stations as possible, following certain defined parameters of the competition, to maximize a score.

What Makes This Exciting?

  • Expanding Participation – By supporting Amateur Radio Contests, Radio Direction Finding (RDF), and other radio-related participatory activities, AGSA is ensuring more girls and women get involved in competitive radio events.
  •
  • STEM Education – Encouraging hands-on learning in science and technology, which is crucial for inspiring future engineers, radio operators, and tech leaders.
  •
  • Financial & Career Support – Scholarships, internships, and sponsorships will help remove barriers for women pursuing Radiosport.
  •
  • Amplifying Success Stories – Recognizing and celebrating female operators will inspire more women to join the field.

AGSA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization already focusing on improving opportunities for girls and women.

AGSA's Fundraising and Support Capabilities

AGSA has a strong ability to coordinate fundraising efforts in support of the mission, providing:

  • Scholarships

Benefits of Supporting Girls and Women in Radiosport

Competition & Challenge

Thrill of the Contest – Many enjoy the fast-paced nature of radiosport, where they try to make as many contacts (QSOs) as possible within a set time.
Skill Development – Tuning into weak signals, adapting to changing propagation, and mastering Morse code (CW) are all part of the challenge.
Breaking Records – Women operators have set and broken records in major contests like the CQ World Wide DX Contest and ARRL Sweepstakes.

Community & Camaraderie

Establishing Global Friendships – Radiosports allow users to connect with people around the world, forming friendships across cultures.
Team Contests – Some enjoy multi-operator categories where teamwork is key.
Mentorship & Support – Organizations like the Young Ladies’ Radio League (YLRL) and YL Contesters encourage women in the field.

Adventure and Travel

DXpeditions – Many women travel to remote locations to activate rare radio zones, islands, or countries.
Portable & Field Events – Events like Summits on the Air (SOTA) and Parks on the Air (POTA) blend radiosport with outdoor adventure.

STEM & Technical Skills

Learning Propagation & Electronics – Radiosport helps women develop skills in radio wave behavior, antenna design, and operating high-frequency bands.
Using Cutting-Edge Tech – Many contests involve digital modes (FT8, RTTY) and software logging, which appeals to tech enthusiasts.
DIY & Experimentation – Many enjoy building their own antennas, radios, and learning about signal propagation.
Satellite & Space Communication – Others enjoy talking to astronauts on the International Space Station or working with satellites.

Public Service and Preparedness

Emergency Communications – Radiosport hones rapid-response communication skills, useful for disaster relief efforts.
Field Day Participation – Many women enjoy Field Day activities, where they test their skills in real-world emergency scenarios.
Disaster Relief – Many women participate in emergency services to support their communities, counties, states, Tribes, and nationally.
Event Support – Providing radio support for marathons, bike races, and community events is another popular activity.
